Creating your own superhero identity is something that requires a lot of thought. Most rlsh’s perfer to come up with an original name and look although there have been a few who have adopted the names of famous comic book characters. To do so though runs the risk of receiving a cease and desist order from the creators.

If you go to wikipedia and look up superheroes you will see hundreds of names from current and long defunct comics companies. So coming up with an original name is not an easy task.

The first thing to decide is what sort of image you want to present. Heroes tend to dress more colorfully ala Superman or Captain America. Anti-Heroes dress in dark or scary personnas like Batman or Wolverine.

While anti-heroes are more popular in fiction this is real life we are talking about so be aware that you will probably frighten not only criminals but the general public who see you which could lead to your arrest.

Case in point. Last year James Holmes dressed in all black with vest and padding and looked like a swat team officer. The next week a rlsh named the Beast was arrested in the parking lot of a Home Depot when some nervous civilian spotted him.

So if you are going to wear your costume in plain sight there are advantages to looking like an obvious hero. Especially if you start running toward someone to help them. Dressed in a black costume with a scary mask might result in your being shot for a criminal.

I hope this does not sound too hypocritical coming from me since clearly I wear a modified ski mask myself, but I do not wear it on patrol. I go out in disguise and only don it in an emergency and then lose it as soon as I can to disappear.

Making your costume yourself is still another hurdle the beginner needs to overcome. Especially for those who cannot sew.

There is a website that will custom make your costume or mask for you called Hero-Gear. You can find it at http://hero-gear.com

Another one is http://xtremedesignfx.com

Not all rlsh’s wear costumes incidently. This is true in both fiction and real life. The fictional Luke Cage does not. In real life Captain Black from New Orleans does not and his deeds speak for him. He does more to help his community than many other rlsh’s.

Not all rlsh’s hide their identities or wear masks and that is true in fiction and real life as well. The fictional Fantastic Four for instance. In real life Super Hero does not as an example. One advantage obviously is that you don’t have to worry about being unmasked or having all of the problems of keeping your two lives separate.

If you are looking for ideas you can go to http://reallifesuperheroes.com and see a gallery of some of the most famous of the real life superheroes to see what others are wearing.

Another idea you might consider as a temporary or permanent costume is the invention of the zip up hoodies. They are hoodies that zip up into masks. You could wear it anytime and not look conspicuous and zip up the mask should you need to go to someone’s rescue.

I am sure others will soon contribute their ideas as well to this thread.

I use a security guard outfit as my costume. It gets me around in public without looking ridiculous. I wear the goggles because they look cool but no one sees me as a superhero in public even with the goggles. I think criminals don’t really suspect me as a superhero and it brings an element of surprise to the game.

I chose a very stereotypical name and look, but I believe it’s original. Probably because nobody thought “Hero Boy” (“Hero Man” in the future) would sound cool enough haha. But nonetheless, I think it does fine.
I got my outfit from Hero Gear; it’s a little ill-fitting but it gives it a homemade/kick-ass look to it; I’ll probably invest in another one or make my own at some point but this works for now.

I don’t wear a mask, but I do keep my identity a secret. I do what the drug dealers in my hometown do; go to the nearest city; 100 miles away, and conduct my business there, because nobody knows me there anyway, and so a mask isn’t necesary for this situation. Something I’m very greatful for, as I like having the obvious superhero look; bright yellow and shiny baby blue and a little yellow cape; I definitely don’t look like a bad guy, and people aren’t usually looking at my face haha; too bright, but I see now it’s a benefit to haing a flashy outfit.
Just pick the times when and when not to. Like, routine patrol, sure, charity, definitely, speaking with senators? NO. Leave the tights at HOME. XD

Nice. Make sure you’ll still be able to see out of it. If you have the means, try getting some kind of clear plastic material which you can shape via heat into a lens shape, then adhere to the inside of the mask so it’s pointing outwards, and then get thin white pantyhose type cloth and put it behind the plastic; this will keep it from brushing up againt your eyeballs, as well as make your eyes look like white glass from the outside, like in the comics. ;)

Lot more complicated….but if you could make it work or find someone who can, that’d be cool. Then hook me up with whoever did it so I can buy one myself, haha. XD

Stay true. Stay free. Stay safe.

that was actually my idea with the eyes to be like in comic books and that lil tip is good because the glass would be good protection of my eyes in alot of case’s

so far i do have a costume well most of one but right now its just for pictures i go out in regular clothing and just keep an eye on things so people dont bother me and so i dont stick out i havnt gone on patrols yet it just way too cold right now but i work in a public place where a lot of people fight and stuff so its easy for me to do what i need to without people paying any attention to me

I’m a pretty big guy, and I found out early that people will still be afraid of me in my camo-jacket, even with the hood down. That’s why I patrol in street-clothes, with the only difference being that I wear cargo-pants and a shirt with four pockets. I also carry a scarf with me: aside from having a variety of other uses, if I see a violent crime happening, I can quickly wrap it around my face and hide my identity that way.
